Path of Exile 2: Editorial Faq for Players
Path of Exile 2 has a reputation for depth that can intimidate newcomers before they have even made a character. This FAQ answers the questions our readers ask most often, keeps to facts that are confirmed, and flags the places where you should check a current source before trusting what you read.
What is Path of Exile 2, and where does it stand now?
It is an action RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games, usually shortened to GGG. Players have had early access since December 2024, and the studio used its Gamescom 2026 appearance to date the full 1.0 release: 11 December 2026. On that day the price barrier disappears, since 1.0 is free-to-play, and a sword-and-shield fighter called the Duelist joins the class roster.
Until that date the game is still in early access, which means systems, balance and content can change substantially between updates. Anything you read about specific numbers should be treated as provisional. For returning players, the practical consequence is simple: a character or build you remember from an earlier phase may not behave the same way today.
How do builds work?
Character builds revolve around gems. Skill gems give your character active abilities, and support gems are socketed into those skills to modify how they behave. Much of the strategic thinking in the game comes from choosing which supports to attach to which skills and how that combination fits your class and gear.
Newcomers often ask which gems are "correct". There is no stable answer to share here, because effects and balance are adjusted between patches, and a list copied from an older guide may describe a version that no longer exists. A better habit is reading the in-game description of each gem and testing combinations on easier content before committing resources.
What should a new player try to learn first?
Realistic learning goals keep the first weeks enjoyable. A short list that works for most people:
- Understand how one main skill and its supports interact before adding more skills.
- Learn to read item properties and decide quickly what to keep, sell or ignore.
- Get comfortable with movement and dodging; positioning matters as much as damage.
- Follow one build guide loosely, but make sure you understand why it makes each choice.
- Keep notes on what failed, since dying to an encounter usually teaches more than a smooth run.
A practical example: if a boss keeps defeating you, change one thing at a time, such as a single support gem or a piece of defensive gear, so you can tell what actually helped. Another: before copying a build from a video, check the upload date and the patch it mentions, then compare its skills with what your own client describes.
What are leagues, and why do they matter?
Leagues are periodic seasons that reset the economy, so everyone starts trading and building from scratch again. This is a big part of the long-term appeal: the market stays fresh, and a mistake in one league does not follow you forever. It also means trading advice expires quickly. Prices, popular builds and farming strategies from a previous league may not apply in the next. If you are new, starting at the beginning of a league is often easier, because everyone around you is at a similar point and the market is still forming.
Outside the official channels, players also come across third-party hubs that collect pages about the game. A hub page such as https://topgamecarry.com/game/poe-2/ groups service and information listings for Path of Exile 2 in one place; it can give a sense of what exists around the game, but it is not an official source, so check any time-sensitive detail there against GGG's own announcements.
Is buying help or currency allowed?
No. Paying cash for items or currency counts as real-money trading, which GGG's terms forbid. Arrangements where another person controls your character, for example boosting or carries that need your login, add account sharing concerns on top. Before considering any of them, think about whether you would hand over credentials, how the rules are worded today, and how many hours of progress a restriction could cost you.
Playing with a group of friends or joining an active guild are the in-game alternatives. They take longer to organize, but nobody else ever touches your account, and you learn the game along the way. Many players also find that the struggle of an early boss is part of what makes the eventual win feel earned.
How do I stay informed about updates?
Use this short fact-check checklist whenever you read something time-sensitive:
- Is the claim backed by GGG's official announcements or patch notes?
- Does the guide state which version, patch or league it was written for?
- Was it written before or after the 1.0 launch on 11 December 2026?
- Do several independent community sources agree?
Official patch notes and announcements remain the authority, and the weeks around 1.0 will bring many changes at once. Read slowly, test in-game and expect some advice to age quickly. Following GGG's own channels and one or two community creators you trust is usually enough; trying to track every source at once mostly produces noise.
